Maranta leuconeura - The Red Prayer plant gets its name from the way the leaves fold in the evening to catch the rain because they resemble hands folded in prayer. Since they are native to the rainforests of Brazil, they do prefer high humidity and although they are somewhat tolerant of low light conditions, they prefer bright, indirect sunlight.
Other names: Prayer plant
Lighting: Bright Indirect/ Medium Light
Watering: Water when the top 2 inches of the soil is dry.
Growth: Vining; moderate grower
Special Notes: This plant can be sensitive to drafts. In the winter, make sure to keep this plant away from cold drafts and hot vents. This variety is one of the most resilient members of the Calathea family.
